about

I originally recorded Going Down for The Shivers. It was a different sort of sound for me - part gravelly, industrial vocals, part clearer melody, and very sludgy in terms of the instrumental portions. I was happy with the chorus, but the verse always felt too atonal for the song. Still, I got burned out and called it done. But it never really felt finished to me. I decided to go back and redo all the verse vocals, add harmony to the chorus, clip the intro a bit, and add a second verse (Owen, this one's for you). It's probably still not quite done yet, but I have a good feeling about this one.

lyrics

Every day it stings
Left me with these broken wings
We don't sing
We're just livid

Circumstance it thrums
Cholera inside me runs
It ain't fun
But we're livin'

Forgive me
But I'm not the one
That you said I'd be
This ain't what I bargained for

Forgive me
But you're not the one
That I thought you'd be
What's behind that door?

Lover, don't you know?
You turn your back, these things still grow
In the house
Where we're livin'

Circumstance it thrums
Mumbled up inside these lungs
Ain't that how
We're all livin'?

Forgive me
But I'm not the one
That you said I'd be
This ain't what I bargained for

Forgive me
But you're not the one
That I thought you'd be
What's behind that door?

about

Ian Marquis Portland, Maine

My songs are tiny ecosystems: self-sustaining, self-contained, intricate, and densely layered. I'm captivated by found sound and immaculate production. I sample my own work. I chop up my guitars and create arrangements I could never have played. I treat my voice like an instrument, pushing and pulling it in otherworldly directions. I polish each track until, sonically, it feels like it sparkles. ... more
