about

I've had bits and pieces of these lyrics in my notebook for a year or so now, but never a song to go with them. Well, I finally sat down and decided to hammer some ideas out. I'm really on a strong electronic/rock/industrial kick lately, and that shows in this track: big guitars, big drums, synthesizers, gruff vocals, and even a vocoder. I did that sort of thing on Supersonic, minus the guitars, but this is another level entirely.

lyrics

There's blood in the stones
Everyone's gotta squeeze
Thirty years in the salt mines
And scabs on your knees

Don't you know it's a game?
Everything tastes the same
And the moths in your wallet
Are always to blame

So you packed up your suitcase
And wasted away
Drank your six dollar coffee
And called it a day

All these boxes and speakers
Are buzzing like flies
And you just want to sleep
But you can't close your eyes

I
Don't want to be famous
Just want you to play this
Oh lemme whisper in your ear

I
Just want you to play me
But this ain't a game, see
I'm what I want you to hear

I've got magic to sell
(Magic sends you to hell)
Don't you want to escape
(There's a pill you can take)

I've got magic to sell
(Magic sends you to hell)
Don't you want to escape
(There's a pill you can take)

Don't you know it's a game?
Everything tastes the same
And the moths in your wallet
Are always to blame

All these boxes and speakers
Are buzzing like flies
And you just want to sleep
But you can't close your eyes

about

Ian Marquis Portland, Maine

My songs are tiny ecosystems: self-sustaining, self-contained, intricate, and densely layered. I'm captivated by found sound and immaculate production. I sample my own work. I chop up my guitars and create arrangements I could never have played. I treat my voice like an instrument, pushing and pulling it in otherworldly directions. I polish each track until, sonically, it feels like it sparkles. ... more
